Q After my father passed away 20 years ago, my mother and I bought two houses as joint owners. One is our main residence, and the other is rented.

At the time we bought them, we could not add my brother to the deeds as he had debt issues. Since then we have bought another house, this one with the three of us as joint owners, which we rent out.
